Greenville First Michelin Star Restaurant

If you've been keeping an eye on the South Carolina dining scene (and honestly, who hasn't?), you know there's some seriously exciting news coming out of Greenville. This charming city in the foothills has officially put its stamp on the global culinary map!

Greenville Gets Its First MICHELIN Star!

That's right! Greenville, South Carolina, is now home to a MICHELIN-Starred restaurant. If you're wondering what the big deal is, a Michelin Star is one of the highest honors a restaurant can achieve—it basically means the food is amazing and totally worth a stop. Think of it as the ultimate thumbs-up from super-secret, very experienced food critics (called inspectors).

In the inaugural Michelin Guide American South announced on November 3, the lucky spot that snagged this prestigious award is Scoundrel.

A Taste of Scoundrel: French Flair in the Upstate

If you're planning a trip to Greenville, you absolutely need to try to snag a reservation here. Scoundrel is an upscale French bistro, so prepare for a dining experience that feels both elegant and totally welcoming.

  • The Vibe: Imagine a beautiful, classic French restaurant but without the stuffiness. Think hardwood floors, exposed brick, and a staff that makes you feel like an old friend.

  • The Food: They serve classic French cuisine with a modern touch. Expect amazing dishes like steak frites (steak and fries, but elevated!), French snails (escargots), and perfectly cooked duck or seafood. The best part? The menu is designed so you can easily share and try a little bit of everything—that's true European hospitality!

  • Why It Won: The Michelin Inspectors highlighted the restaurant's charm, the high-quality French cooking by Chef/owner Joe Cash, and the engaging staff who are clearly passionate about what they do. It’s all about the finesse and flavor, and Scoundrel nails it!

It's Not Just Greenville: SC's Star-Studded Lineup

Greenville is in great company! The whole state of South Carolina is shining brightly on the culinary front, proving that the American South is a serious food destination. The inaugural MICHELIN Guide American South selection actually awarded a total of four One MICHELIN Star restaurants in the state.

Besides Greenville's Scoundrel, three other fantastic spots in Charleston were also recognized:

  • Vern's (Charleston): Serving up incredible contemporary American food. This spot is super popular, so if you're in Charleston, plan ahead!

  • Wild Common (Charleston): Known for its unique tasting menus—it’s where you go for a truly special, non-traditional meal.

  • Malagón Mercado y Taperia (Charleston): A super charming, unassuming spot that focuses on simple, vibrant Spanish tapas. It’s a little taste of old-world Spain right in the heart of the Lowcountry.

Besides the main mentions, four other restaurants in the Greenville area received a "Recommended" distinction in the American South guide: Soby's and Jianna (both downtown), The Anchorage (West Greenville), and Topsoil (Travelers Rest).

More Than Just Stars: Greenville's Food Scene is Booming!

While Scoundrel is our first star, the whole food scene in Greenville is buzzing. The city is often called the "South's Next Big Food City," and it’s no exaggeration. From local legends serving up "New South" cuisine (like Soby's) to amazing farm-to-table spots, your taste buds will thank you for visiting.

Greenville is a seriously walkable city, especially downtown, so you can easily stroll from Falls Park to a cozy cafe or an award-winning restaurant. This Michelin Star just cements what locals already knew: Greenville is a must-visit city for anyone who loves great food!

So, what are you waiting for? Book that trip, make a reservation at Scoundrel (and maybe one of those great Charleston spots too!), and get ready to taste why South Carolina is the newest must-stop destination on the global food map!
