Forbes has once again recognized Greenville as one of the best places to retire in the United States.

The magazine studied 950 cities to compile its 2025 list. It focused on affordability, access to healthcare, and quality of life. Greenville stood out.

Why Greenville is a best place to retire?

The median home price in Greenville is $317,000. That’s nearly $90,000 less than the national median of $404,000. The cost of living is also 9% below the national average.

Is stretching your retirement dollars a priority for you? Greenville checks that box.

Forbes praised the area’s strong healthcare access. Greenville has a high number of primary care doctors per resident. That’s a major plus for retirees who want consistent care without long waits.

The climate is mild, and the air quality is solid. Greenville is also somewhat walkable and bikeable, which supports an active lifestyle.

Greenville has no state estate or inheritance tax. South Carolina doesn’t tax Social Security, and it allows up to $10,000 in retirement income deductions per person. If taxes worry you in retirement, Greenville may ease that concern.

The magazine highlighted Falls Park in downtown Greenville. It’s a 32-acre park with scenic views of the Reedy River Falls. The area offers green space and walking paths right in the heart of the city.

Yes, there are risks of flooding in some neighborhoods during heavy rain. But Greenville sits 200 miles inland, and FEMA gives it a moderate risk rating.

What about crime? Forbes mentioned that the city’s serious crime rate is above the national average. This is worth thinking about when choosing a neighborhood. Greenville offers a wide range of communities, from urban to rural, to suit your comfort level.

Greenville has around 75,000 residents and sits in the Blue Ridge Mountain foothills. It’s located between Atlanta and Charlotte, which opens up travel and day trip options.

Forbes didn’t rank cities in order but listed them alphabetically. The list also includes cities like Raleigh, Tucson, and Madison. But Greenville continues to draw attention for its balance of affordability and lifestyle. Travel + Leisure already ranked Greenville the best place to retire in South Carolina last year.

Are you thinking about where to retire? Greenville belongs on your list. It offers value, healthcare, outdoor beauty, and a growing community of retirees who made the same move.
