Brief History of Greer, SC
The Blakely Place was a 200 acre farm owned by James Manning Greer, it was in this site where the present Greer is located. James Manning Greer traded a few acres of the farm to the railroad and later sold the rest of his land to W.T. Shumate who later sold the lots when the latter realized the potential for a town around the train station.
Greer owed its creation to the Southern railroad which was finished in 1873. In 1876, the town was incorporated as ‘Greers,’ the “s” disappeared sometime in the early part of the century. Textile mills and agricultural products are among the firsts to fuel Greer’s commerce. Greer remains a center of business in the Upstate region today. It is the site of the only BMW manufacturing facility in North America and the main headquarters for Michelin North America.

Located in the picturesque foothills of the Upstate region of South Carolina, Greer is a city between Greenville and Spartanburg counties. It is located just off I-85 between Charlotte, NC and Atlanta, Georgia. It has a total area of 16.1 square miles.
