Founded in 1845 to connect South Carolina’s Piedmont region to the Columbia-Charleston rail system, Belton emerged as a thriving town thanks to its railroad junction, cotton mills, and a water tower, the Belton Standpipe, built in 1908. The town was officially incorporated in 1855 due to a population surge following the completion of the railroad in 1853, and it was named after John Belton O’Neal, the first president of the Columbia and Greenville Railroad.
