Brief History of Central, SC

Central is a town in Pickens County. This quiet town was founded by the Atlanta and Richmond Air Line Company in a railroad boom that began in 1873 and was incorporated as a town two years later. The town was thriving until the late 1890s when the Southern Railroad moved its headquarters to Greenville. Thereafter, trains no longer stopped to change engines, and soon most of the businesses in town closed. The town begin to thrive once more when local businessmen created opportunities for employment at Issaqueena Mill in the early 1900s.

Today Central is home to over 5,000 residents as of 2020 census. Residents of Central take pride in their rich cultural history and in preserving their great environment.

Location of Central, SC

Central is located in northwestern South Carolina, along SC Highway 93. It is approximately 126 miles north of Atlanta, Georgia and 128 miles south of Charlotte, North Carolina. The name Central is not because it is not near the central area of South Carolina but because its location is halfway between Atlanta and Charlotte along the former Atlanta ad Richmond Air-Line Railway line. It is a city that lies near the mountains and is conveniently located along the shores of Lake Hartwell. is adjacent to the city of Clemson, home of Clemson University.
