Brief History of Duncan, SC

Duncan, South Carolina has a rich history that stems from its post-Civil War development as a railroad town. Originally known as New Hope, the town was renamed Vernonville before being renamed Duncan in 1881, after Leroy Duncan, who owned much of the land in the area.

Duncan, SC holds significance in Spartanburg County’s African-American history as the location of the Rock Hill Negro School, which was established in 1881. Duncan experienced growth, reaching a population of 200 people and boasting a variety of businesses such as general stores, mills, and a cotton gin. In 1889, the town obtained its charter. The Hughes Hotel, which opened in 1892, added to the town’s charm and drew travelers along the Greenville-Spartanburg road.
