Homesteaders from Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia settled in the mid-1700s and built a fort about two miles from the current city. Landrum was founded in 1880 after the railroad was extended north from Spartanburg and named after John Gill Landrum, who donated the property for the local depot’s construction. Landrum was established as a town in 1883 and was constituted as a city in 1973.
