Piedmont, South Carolina, was once known as Garrison Shoals and was a popular fishing spot. Piedmont was given its name by H.P. In 1876, Hammett founded the Piedmont Manufacturing Company, which grew to become the largest mill in the United States before 1900 and was named a National Historic Landmark in 1978. Piedmont had a significant part in the history of mill development in the South, helping the Upstate become the Textile Center of the World.
