Brief History of Travelers Rest, SC
Originally home to several Indian tribes, Travelers Rest, situated almost directly against the border of the North Carolina mountains, gained popularity as a stopover for weary travelers and livestock herders.
In 1888, the construction of the railway began along the Reedy River from Greenville north to River Falls. What we call now as “Swamp Rabbit” was the name of the train. Travelers Rest was incorporated as a city in 1891. It was once a large farming community until the first major industry came in 1929, when Brandon Mills began production at Renfrew Bleachery. The population of Travelers Rest began to grow after World War II when other industries relocated in the area.

Travelers Rest is located between the Blue Ridge Mountains and Greenville. It is 104 miles or two hours from Charlotte, 222 miles or three and one-half hours from Charleston, 166 miles or three hours from Atlanta, and 277 miles or five hours from Myrtle Beach. The Greenville downtown airport and the Greenville/Spartanburg International Airport serve Travelers Rest, along with Amtrak train and Greyhound bus service. Travelers Rest has a total area of 4.4 square miles.
