The town of Williamston was initially known as Mineral Springs as the town is famous for its mineral springs and it is because of this that the town grew and became the Saratoga of the South. The spring was discovered by West Allen Williams on his property and the town was named after him in the mid-1880s. During the boom of the textile industry, cotton mills settled in Williamston and played a major role in shaping the communities.
